I believe in the importance of strong, clear writing, especially when it comes to educational, scientific, and technical content. Below are some samples of my professional writing and documentation work.
Article on the Harmonic Series (Science/Educational)
This is an article that seeks to answer the question “What is the difference between a musical tone and ‘noise?’” and discusses the relationship between acoustic science and music theory. It ends with a series of discussion questions intended to prompt the reader to think about the relationship between acoustics, music composition and music production.
Because this was written for my music students, it assumes some basic music knowledge, but much of it will still be accessible to readers of all backgrounds.
If you have more of a background in music theory, you might be interested in my article on The Spiral of True Fifths (pdf) which details the mathematical relationships that make up the circle of fifths and their relationships to the seven diatonic modes and to the “dark” and “light” side of the circle of fifths.
Cinematic Studio Series Manual
I wrote this short technical manual for the Cinematic Studio Series virtual instrument plug-ins. It was created as a starting place for my music students to begin using this specialized software without getting bogged down by too much detail.
In creating a simplified manual that is intended to cover the majority of the everyday use of the Cinematic Studio Series instruments, I utilized labeled screenshots from the software’s graphical user interface and tables detailing various features and their uses.
Breakwater Arena Documentation (Technical Documentation)
I created this document as part of my work as a technical sound designer and composer for a game called Breakwater Arena: New Wave. When integrating my sound events into a game, it is crucial that developers and programmers understand the way I’ve designed the interactive elements and the way I’ve programmed their behaviors. The purpose of this document is to present clear, detailed information that allows them to understand each sound event and how it should be wired up in-engine so that the game’s audio behaves as expected.
